IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON GENDER ISSUES






INTRODUCTION-

Within recent decades, globalization has become a commonly used term to describe an integrated world economy. However, despite it becoming a commonly used term world-wide, it continuous to be difficult to understand in terms of its precise definition, form and impact. The concept globalization tends to be difficult to understand because of its various meaningS that depend on various dimensions or aspects of globalization being addressed. Globalization tends to be viewed differently by individuals depending on their ideologies or background. However, it is often described as a multi-dimensional phenomenon with political and cultural dimensions and economic factor playing a key role.


          Women have experienced globalization in a number of different ways. For the educated and professionally qualified women, it has opened up new opportunities. But for the unskilled, it has meant loss of livelihoods in the face of increasing competition. Globalization has proved to intensify existing inequalities and heighten the vulnerability of poor women who dominate in the informal sector where they work under exploitative conditions without labour rights or any form of social protection.

Globalization has both positive and negative impact on gender issues-


POSITIVE IMPACTS-IMPACTS-


1. Prospects of higher and quality education have become feasible for those women who can afford them, economically and socially.

2. With changing attitude towards women, especially in the urban areas, women enjoy more egalitarian set of gender relationship.

3. Augmentation of women's movements through exposures at the international level will help bring about major changes in the economic, social and political lives of Women.

4. Employment in technology and other advanced sectors, which have global bearing, has opened up for suitably qualified women.


NEGATIVE IMPACTS-


1. Globalization has increased the number of low paid, part time and exploitative jobs for women.


2. With increasing nuclear families, the older women's life has become pitiable, sometimes spending their later days in old age homes and isolation.


3. Male migration from rural areas to urban duties has put the women under triple burden of home making, farming and job in rural sector.


4. Women's migrating for economic reasons has led to increased exploitation including sexual exploitation and trafficking. 

      

      Thus it could be stated that women have experienced globalization in a number of different ways. The seeds of equality have been sown and now it is the responsibility leadership and the bureaucratic structure to nurture it too blossom.
